Behind the Mask

Henri Matisse was our Artist of the Month in March. That is when we started work on our ceramic masks. We knew that Matisse had given Pablo Picasso a mask that had inspired him, so we thought we would make our own masks. Instead of creating an African mask like the gift Matisse gave Picasso, we used the designs and shapes that we saw in some of Matisse’s work to decorate our masks. It was a great way to practice clay joinery and work on our glazing skills.
